Message from the CEO/Registrar about the New Emergency Order Limiting Public Events

On March 28, 2020, the Government of Ontario took even greater action to limit the spread of COVID-19 by issuing a new emergency order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protections Act (EMPCA) to restrict public events and social gatherings to a maximum of five people. This extreme measure was enacted to keep communities safe and replaces the previous order banning organized public events of over 50 people.

During these challenging times, the CMRAO has continued to receive and respond to a variety of questions from the condominium management sector regarding board meetings, annual general meetings (AGMs), requisitioned meetings, and use of common spaces.

I would like to emphasize that it is a collective responsibility to ensure the health and safety of condominium communities. The CMRAO understands that these are exceptional circumstances and will support condominium managers who act in accordance with current government directions (including emergency orders) regarding the decisions they make and the advice they give to condominium boards during the COVID-19 crisis.

We advise you to continue communicating closely with your condominium boards and seeking legal advice when needed. As providers of an essential service, condominium managers can continue to operate but should limit in-person interactions and maintain the recommended physical distance.

The COVID-19 situation is constantly evolving, and the CMRAO is here to provide support to condominium communities across the province through this crisis. Condominium managers can continue to contact the CMRAO by email or phone for information during this time.
