Message from the Chair: Licensing Fee Reduction

The Condominium Management Regulatory Authority of Ontario (CMRAO) is a not-for-profit corporation funded through the fees of condo management licensees. The fees allow us to meet our consumer protection mandate by regulating condo managers pursuant to the  Condominium Management Services Act, 2015 (CMSA).

The CMRAO’s initial licensing fee structure was established in 2017, following consultation with stakeholders representing the condominium management sector. The Board of Directors of the CMRAO met recently to review our operational expenses, and I am pleased to announce that we have made the decision to reduce fees for the 2019-20 licensing year for two primary reasons:

  • First, we have maintained a favourable relationship with the industry since the very beginning, and as a result of that we wanted to respond positively to an ongoing concern that fees be kept low—and the cost of doing business reasonable.

  • Second, as we explored the overall operational experience of two cycles of licensing (the initial licensing period and the renewal period), we now see that we have the capacity to reduce fees by 6.6% for all classes of licences. The Board made the decision to do this because it was prudent, fair, and reasonable.Current licensees who renew their licence will pay the reduced licensing fees, and so will all new applicants who apply for a licence after June 1, 2019.

The condominium industry continues to evolve rapidly, and the sector has responded positively and quickly to new changes. Like other licensed occupations in Ontario, condominium managers are professionals who need a licence to provide services. The CMRAO Board of Directors is very pleased to make this adjustment, which reflects the sector’s commitment to consumer protection and to professionalization.
